Journey
The Nkuku and Jopie Sisters were a South African musical duo that rose to prominence in the late 1980s, becoming influential figures in South Africa. Their artistry is characterized by vibrant vocal harmonies and rhythmic arrangements that capture the essence of South African folk traditions. The duo’s most definitive work is the 1989 album Tana Ka Mina, a project that featured popular tracks such as "Mohva," "Lowo Kala Manu," and "Vhiriete."
Their music achieved significant reach beyond regional borders when they were featured on major international compilations. Notable among these was the 1990 release Homeland 2: A Collection of Black South African Music by Rounder Records, and the 1994 soundtrack for the film The Air Up There. Working closely with composer F. Mkhari, the sisters utilized their platform to bring the sounds of the township and rural heartlands to a global audience, leaving a lasting mark on the country's cultural archive.
